How often...

...should 9 and 11-year old boys go to confession? Advice from priests and experienced fathers of young lads particularly welcome.

Hopefully at that age they do not have too many mortal sins but it is important to go regularly (fortnightly, or monthly) to build up the habit for later life when they have more temptations. At that age children tend to be more open to admitting their sins, so its a good time to try and start the habit rather than when they are teenagers and are not open to admitting anything. All this should help them see that Confession is an ordinary part of Catholic life, not something unusual.

Hope this is useful.

Frequent confession is highly desirable. Confession should form part of a spiritual way of life and become a 'positive' action rather than a 'negative' one as it is viewed by so many today.
It does not matter that a 9 year old only has venial sins to confess, they are still a stain on the soul and should be eradicated asap.
To do otherwise is akin to not treating a minor cancer (because it is minor). We all know the result there!
In short, once a week or once a fortnight at the very least.

In addition to the above, (with which I agree.) A month is a relatively larger part of a ten year old's life than of a fifty year old's life. It seems to them a longer time. To leave confession for two or three months can seem like an age for a child. So fortnightly or monthly is good.

Oh! and don't forget that when we celebrate the sacrament of Penance, we receive extra graces even if there are only venial sins to confess.
